Ang Mo Kio (AMK) Central is one of the places to go for goody hawker food for food lovers. The hawker center at Blk 724 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 6 alone houses quite a few famous stalls selling fried oyster omelette, satay bee hoon, dessert and minced pork noodle, among many others. The famous Tip Top curry puff stall can also be found in AMK Central. Most of the stalls have been around for more than 20 years.

Another stall that has been around and serving the AMK residents for more than 30 years is Broadway Claypot Rice (百乐匯砂煲饭). Tucked away in a corner of AMK Central, Broadway Claypot Rice serves up one of the best kampong chicken claypot rice in Singapore.

I remember I had this claypot rice a few times before and the last time was more than 10 years ago. Tonight, my family and I decided to test it out again after such a long absence.

We ordered a kampong chicken claypot rice for three, braised pig trotter and stir-fried sweet potato leaves (from the tze char stall). Although the coffeeshop was pretty crowded tonight, it didn’t take too long for the dishes to be served.

The chicken claypot rice was served piping hot and steaming. The aroma of the claypot rice immediately penetrated our nostrils the moment it was set in front of us. The rice was quite well cooked and it wasn’t too dry or lumpy. The chicken and Chinese sausage (lup cheong) in the rice were fat and juicy and they really enhance the fragrance of the whole dish. The best part of the claypot rice has to be the burnt and charred rice crisps at the bottom of the pot, which was nice and crunchy. It was not overly burnt and gave the rice an added flavour.

The chicken claypot rice is still as good as before. However, the portion of the rice can be more generous. If you and your friends or families are big carb eaters, I suggest you order a portion bigger.

Both the braised pig trotter and sweet potato leaves are pretty normal. There’s nothing to shout about. I’ve tasted better versions elsewhere. Oh well… anyway they are well known for their claypot rice and they do serve up good and yummalicious claypot rice. If you happen to be in AMK and craving for nice and delicious claypot rice, Broadway Claypot Rice is still the place to go to satisfy your taste bud.

Verdict: A must try for claypot rice lover!
